April 12 - 22, 2023
Shortly before Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his disciples, “ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Soon this prophecy of global evangelism began coming to pass in the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul. Bible in hand, we will follow Paul as he ministered in a context of economic wealth, cultural sophistication, militarily might, moral corruption, and religious diversity. We will visit Corinth, where he challenged a sorely tempted church to live up to the glorious gospel of Jesus; Ephesus, Paul’s home for over two years and location of some of his most provocative preaching (Acts 19); Philippi, likely the first church in Europe and the place where Paul and Silas testified of their love for Christ by singing his praises while imprisoned (Acts 16); Athens, home to the greatest philosophers in western civilization, the audience for Paul’s famous “Mars Hill” sermon (Acts 17); and Thessalonica, where Paul and his friends were called “these that have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). In following Paul we will find a world surprisingly similar to our own, and a great place for thinking about how we can be witnesses for Christ to the ends of the earth.

July 8 - 17, 2019
Rome, the largest, most magnificent and powerful city in the ancient western world, ruled an empire that stretched from Britain in the north to Egypt in the South, from Portugal in the west to Persia in the east. Economic, social, military, and political power radiated outward from this capital city. Then,in the first few centuries AD, Rome became the center of a religious community whose cultural influence, intellectual sophistication, and moral force soon burst out of its Mediterranean confines to become the world’s largest religion.
Our tour begins with the glories of legendary Rome and the foundations of our Christian faith in the early church. We will visit the catacombs, where Christians found refuge from persecution, and the Colosseum, where they died valiantly for their faith, and other ancient ruins where the courageous band of Christ-followers quietly evangelized their pagan neighbors. We will also visit the Vatican, where Christianity made its own bid for earthly power. Of course, Rome is but one city in the gorgeous country of Italy. We will see Florence, home of breathtaking architecture and the artwork that we know from grade school picture books. Well get to float (and walk) our way through the medieval city of Venice, and end our tour in Milan, where St. Augustine was persuaded to be a Christian. Prepare to enjoy the warmth of the Italian sun, relish authentic Italian food, and take in some of the most beautiful sites in Europe. What better setting to learn about the history of the early church than in the hills and valleys of Italy and the company of fellow believers?

On October 31, 1517, a loyal Catholic priest named Martin Luther nailed 95 theological arguments (theses) on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Soon a fierce debate over true Christianity—the Protestant Reformation—erupted throughout Europe that gave rise to much of what Christians take for granted today, such as salvation by grace alone through faith alone, the ultimate authority of Scripture, and religious toleration, as well as to some of the hallmarks of the modern world, including free market capitalism, social equality, democracy, and individualism. Join us as we tour Luther’s Germany, from Wittenberg to the Wartburg castle in Eisenach, where Luther translated the New Testament into German, and Worms, where he was put on trial and condemned. We will pause by the clear waters of the Aare River in Bern, Switzerland, where some of our Anabaptist ancestors were publicly drowned; visit the grave of Samuel Froehlich and others whose names will sound familiar (Lanz, Hodel, Steiner, Klopfenstein, Weiss, Getz, Ackerman . . .) in the lovely old city of Strasbourg, France; trace the steps of Anabaptist leaders through the streets of old Zurich and into the Swiss hills where they escaped to worship in secret; and enjoy the charming streets of the Swiss village of Stein am Rhein. We’ll marvel at the grand medieval cathedrals where Luther, Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, and other great reformers preached while we consider their Biblical discoveries that changed the world. We’ll even make a brief visit to a site antithetical to the Reformation: the Nazi concentration camp in the Vosges mountains of France. Along the way, we’ll do group Bible studies, sing, enjoy Christian fellowship, and eat plenty of chocolate. The religious landscape of Germany, Switzerland, and France will be at its best for this 500th anniversary, making 2017 a prime time to visit beautiful Europe!
